Early Release reports on key health indicators
The National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) provides preliminary estimates for several important health measures (key health indicators) before the final NHIS data files are ready for release. The NHIS Early Release program produces—
- National estimates for these health indicators every three months (quarterly)
- National estimates with some demographic information twice a year (biannually)
Key indicators include
- Health status, including disability status or diagnosed hypertension
- Healthcare service use, including doctor visits or dental exams
- Healthcare access, including not taking medications to save money
- Health insurance coverage
- Health behaviors, like tobacco use

Earlier estimates
Pre-2019 Early Release estimates are available in the CDC Archive.
From April 2001 to March 2018, estimates were published quarterly in separate PDFs featuring figures and tables. These were based on 1997–September 2017 NHIS data. From June 2018 to June 2019, estimates were updated quarterly in a single online dynamic report based on 2006–2018 NHIS data.
