Hazardous Energy Control (Lockout and Other Means)

Existing NIOSH Recommendations

NIOSH previously published two documents with recommendations and work accident issues (NIOSH 1983 & 1999). The documents give simple effective advice on lockout-tagout. More modern advice based on risk assessment is available in national and international standards as well as in some OSHA recommendations. These documents, however, are still helpful and informative (Guidelines for Controlling Hazardous Energy During Maintenance and Servicing NIOSH Publication No. 83-125, September 1983 and Preventing Worker Deaths from Uncontrolled Release of Electrical, Mechanical, and Other Types of Hazardous Energy NIOSH Publication No. 99–110, July 1999).
