The Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH) Infectious Diseases Bureau is committed to protecting the health of Marylanders by preventing the spread of infectious diseases, ensuring food safety, facilitating access to services for TB, sexually transmitted infections including HIV, rabies and other transmissible diseases, and providing facts and data on infectious disease and environmental health issues. Appointed by the Governor with Senate advice and consent, the Secretary of Health and Mental Hygiene is responsible for the functions of the Department. The Secretary Joshua M. Sharfstein, MD also directs and coordinates numerous boards, commissions, and citizen advisory groups.
