About ICSH
Public Law 98-474, the Comprehensive Smoking Education Act, established the Interagency Committee on Smoking and Health (ICSH). The federal government chartered the committee in 1985. The role of ICSH is to advise the Department of Health and Human Services and CDC on:
- research coordination,
- educational programs, and
- other activities within HHS that relate to the effect of smoking on human health.
The committee is also responsible for building and maintaining ties with related private groups, other federal agencies, and state and local public agencies. Together, they carry out activities related to the effect of cigarette smoking on human health.
