Utility of State-Based Basic Screening Survey Reports for National Oral Health Surveillance in Older Adults

PEER REVIEWED

A flowchart describes how potential BSSs were identified and screened for inclusion criteria. Twenty-five states were identified for possible BSS data using reference documents from ASTDD and Oral Health America. Of those, 8 were excluded for lack of information (Alaska, Delaware, Indiana, Kentucky, Nebraska, Oregon, Rhode Island, and Virginia). Two additional state reports were identified through internet searches. One BSS report was excluded because the mean age of its sample population was <65 years (Indian Health Service). For Aim 1, 18 BSS reports were chosen (Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Kansas [2012], Maryland, Michigan [2014–2015], Minnesota, New Hampshire, North Carolina, North Dakota [2016], Texas, Vermont, Washington [2016], Wisconsin, and West Virginia [2012]). Seven BSS reports were excluded because they reported community-dwelling adults only. 11 BSS reports were included in Aim 2 (Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Georgia, Kansas, Maryland, Minnesota, North Carolina, North Dakota, Vermont, and Wisconsin).
