Planning for the Strategic Recruitment of Barbershops for Blood Pressure Screening and Referral in the Mississippi Delta Region
The figure consists of 3 maps. The first map is an interactive map of the 18 counties that make up the Mississippi Delta (Bolivar, Carroll, Coahoma, DeSoto, Holmes, Humphreys, Issaquena, Leflore, Panola, Quitman, Sharkey, Sunflower, Tallahatchie, Tunica, Tate, Warren, Washington, Yazoo). The map shows locations of existing partner barbershop cities (n = 10) in 10 counties: Batesville, Clarksdale, Cleveland, Greenville, Greenwood, Indianola, Itta Bena, Leland, Shelby, Webb. Counties fall into 6 categories to indicate their heart disease death rates: 236.4 to 298.5 (DeSoto, Holmes, Tallahatchie, Washington); 298.6 to 328.2 (Bolivar, Sharkey, Yazoo); 328.3 to 397.6 (Coahoma, Tate, Warren); 397.7 to 447.5 (Leflore, Panola, Sunflower); 447.6–574.8 (Humphreys, Quitman, Tunica); and fewer than 20 events (Carroll, Issaquena).
The second map is an interactive map of the 18 Mississippi Delta counties with locations of partner barbershops (n = 14) and potential partner barbershops (n = 8) in 9 counties (Bolivar, Coahoma, Leflore, Humphreys, Panola, Quitman, Sunflower, Tallahatchie, Washington). Counties fall into 5 categories that indicate the 2010 population of black men aged 18 years or older by concentrations at census block group level: 0 to 90 (DeSoto, Yazoo); 91 to 149 (Carroll, Quitman, Washington, Sharkey); 150 to 223 (Humphreys, Tate, Tallahatchie, Warren); 224 to 306 (Bolivar, Coahoma, Leflore, Panola); and 307 to 2,860 (Issaquena, Holmes, Sunflower, Tunica). The figure includes a scale of miles with 1 inch equivalent to 10 miles.
The third map shows the portion of Mississippi that comprises the Mississippi Delta counties.
Figure. Planning for the strategic recruitment of barbershops for blood pressure screening and referral in the Mississippi Delta region. The maps show heart disease death rates by county and concentrations of adult black men at census block group level and locations of partner and potential partner barbershops. Together these maps help public health professionals identify communities that may be interested in improving hypertension awareness and treatment among black men by participating in the B.R.O.T.H.E.R.S. initiative to provide blood pressure screenings at barbershops. Heart disease is defined by the International Classification of Diseases, 10th edition, categories I11, I13, and I20 through I51 (2).
