Prevalence of Cigarette Advertising and Other Promotional Strategies at the Point of Sale in St Louis, Missouri: Analysis by Store Type and Distance From a School
The figure contains 6 separate maps of St Louis City and County showing the location of each of the 6 store types (convenience store without a gas station, small market, convenience store with a gas station, other store, drugstore, and supermarket) by the number of ads at the store and the store’s location in relation to a 2,000-feet buffer around schools. The part of St Louis that is west of the westernmost interstate that runs north to south, located roughly in the center of the county, has far fewer schools and stores than the eastern part of the county. Convenience stores with gas stations, mostly in the eastern and central part, have the largest number of locations posting 13 or more ads; 61.5% of these stores had 13 or more ads. Small markets, in the eastern and northern part of St Louis, also had a high concentration of locations posting 13 or more ads; 62.6% of these stores had 13 or more ads. Supermarkets and drugstores, also in the eastern and central parts, had locations posting fewer than 13 ads; 11.4% of supermarkets and 12.5% of drugstores had 13 or more ads. Convenience stores without gas and other stores were all in the eastern part and were approximately evenly split between locations with fewer than 13 ads and 13 or more ads; 66.7% of convenience stores without gas had 13 or more ads and 31.8% of other stores had 13 or more ads.
