SYSTEMATIC REVIEW

Supermarket and Grocery Store–Based Interventions to Promote Healthful Food Choices and Eating Practices: A Systematic Review

Fifty-eight articles describing 33 interventions were identified. Data (eg, setting, date, outcomes) were extracted and summarized descriptively for each intervention. Thirty-three interventions were grouped into 7 categories, according to 4 intervention strategies used, and were also scored according to study design, effectiveness, and reach. Scores were grouped and averaged by category. Categories were then assessed for availability of evidence according to number of interventions in each category. A summary score (range, 0–27) for evidence was calculated for each category by using scores for design, effectiveness, reach, and availability. Four categories were found to be insufficient; 3 categories, sufficient; and 0 categories, strong.
