New DCAS Director, Grady Calhoun, CHP

DCAS is pleased to announce our new Director, Grady Calhoun. Mr. Calhoun has over 30 years of experience in health physics and management of health physics programs. He has a Masters in Health Physics from the University of Cincinnati and is a Certified Health Physicist (CHP) by the American Board of Health Physics.
Grady began his professional work career in 1988 as a Radiological Engineer at the Duane Arnold Nuclear Power Plant in Palo, Iowa. He came back to his home town of Cincinnati in 1990 starting as a Radiological Engineer at the Fernald Environmental Management Project (FEMP). During his 11 years at FEMP, he assumed multiple radiological control and occupational safety and health management positions, including that of the Fernald site Operations Radiological Control Manager.
In 2001, Mr. Calhoun joined DCAS to support the Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Program Act of 2000 (EEOICPA). He began his tenure at DCAS as a Health Physicist and was promoted to Supervisory Health Scientist in 2003. Grady was involved in the development of nearly every aspect of the NIOSH Dose Reconstruction Program. He performed, reviewed, and approved dose reconstructions, as well as led Special Exposure Cohort (SEC) evaluation teams. He also frequently participated in outreach programs to train stakeholders and answered questions about the dose reconstruction and SEC processes.
In his new role, Mr. Calhoun will serve as the primary spokesman for the NIOSH Dose Reconstruction Program. He will provide leadership and guidance to scientific, professional, administrative, technical, and support staff. Mr. Calhoun also will oversee and participate in program planning, policy-making, and budget management. He will continue working closely with program stakeholders such as the Department of Labor, Department of Energy, claimants, dose reconstruction contractors, labor organizations, and the President’s Advisory Board on Radiation and Worker Health.
