Haul trucks are important pieces of mining equipment and vital to many surface operations. Haul trucks can also be dangerous, accounting for more than 10% of all fatal accidents in mining and a significant number of nonfatal injuries. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted an analysis of fatal injuries associated with haul trucks. Researchers reviewed the fatal accident reports and determined the contributing factors for these fatalities. Over the past 20 years, haul trucks have contributed to the deaths of 152 miners. The majority of these fatal injuries were sustained by haul truck drivers.
