This paper describes Bureau of Mines research and development of a new and innovative mine lighting system based on fiber optics technology. The new lighting concept offers significant advantages over conventional systems in the areas of both safety and long-term maintenance costs. An overview of Bureau research into the problems and limitations of present-day mine lighting systems is also presented.
