Key points
- NIOSH provides support to conferences and scientific meetings about occupational safety and health research.
- There are two funding mechanisms for conference funding: a grant and a cooperative agreement.
Funding overview
NIOSH provides support for high quality scientific meetings, conferences, and workshops, that are relevant to NIOSH's scientific mission. These events promote occupational safety and health, NIOSH program priorities, and public health. The conference program is integral to the overall mission of NIOSH.
A conference or scientific meeting is defined as a gathering, symposium, seminar, workshop or any other organized and formal meeting where persons assemble in person or meet virtually to
- Coordinate, exchange, and disseminate information or to explore, or
- Clarify a defined subject, problem, or area of knowledge.
Applications should address and advance important areas of research in the field of occupational safety and health of particular interest to NIOSH programs and the National Occupational Research Agenda. NIOSH will not consider applications for training-only events.
Funding by category
Research Grant
This is a R13 conference grant mechanism to support recipient sponsored and directed meetings, conferences, and workshops. A grant is an assistance mechanism providing money to an eligible entity to carry out an approved project or activity.
For an individual conference/meeting, NIOSH expects to award up to $20,000 in total costs. We anticipate funding up to five awards per year. The total amount awarded, and the number of awards will depend upon the number, quality, and cost of the applications received.
Cooperative Agreement
This is a U13 cooperative agreement conference grant mechanism to support recipient sponsored and directed meetings, conferences, and workshops. Cooperative agreements are an assistance mechanism used when there will be substantial Federal scientific or programmatic involvement. Substantial involvement means that, before and after award, scientific or program staff will assist, guide, coordinate, or participate in project activities.
For an individual conference/meeting, NIOSH expects to award up to $30,000 in total costs. However, with prior approval from NIOSH, applicants may request up to $75,000 in total costs per year.
NIOSH anticipates funding four awards per year. The total amount awarded, and the number of awards will depend upon the number, quality, and cost of the applications received.
