From 2001 to 2021, the suicide rate in the United States increased by 32%, a nearly constant increase. In comparison to the mainland, Puerto Rico's age-adjusted suicide rate fell by 29% between 2001 and 2021, from 7.8 to 5.5. Despite this decline, suicide remains a significant public health concern in Puerto Rico, particularly among the adult and elderly populations.
