Position and organization

CDC's National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) is seeking a Senior Service Fellow (environmental epidemiologist). This role is in the Division of Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (DHANES).

NCHS is the nation's principal health statistics agency. NCHS's mission is to collect, analyze, and publish timely, relevant, and accurate health data and statistics. Our products and services inform the public and guide program and policy decisions to improve our nation’s health.

The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) is a nationally representative survey of the U.S. population. The survey is unique in combining interviews and health examinations, including biospecimen collection.

Fellowship overview

As a member of DHANES’s Analysis Branch, you will conduct analysis of NHANES data. For example, you might analyze infectious disease or chronic disease outcomes using NHANES data.

In collaboration with other researchers at NCHS and beyond, you will—

  • Select appropriate statistical and epidemiologic methods
  • Plan and implement high-quality research on health topics
  • Prepare comprehensive reports of study results for NCHS's scientific publications
  • Present research activities at professional conferences and meetings

You may be asked to perform other tasks as needed, including—

  • Conducting ad hoc analyses
  • Participating in workgroups
  • Answering public inquiries

Qualifications

This position is open to all U.S. citizens or legal permanent residents with a work authorization. Applicants are responsible for obtaining the necessary work authorization.

Successful applicants will have the following qualifications—

  • Successfully completed a Ph.D. in a health-related field (for example, epidemiology)
  • Experience and coursework in infectious disease or chronic disease
  • Strong skills in SAS, STATA, SUDAAN, R, or other statistical software for analyzing complex data

The following skills and knowledge are highly desirable—

  • Knowledge of complex surveys
  • Strong speaking, writing, and interpersonal skills

Terms of appointment

The successful candidate will be offered an initial 23-month appointment, which may be extended. A starting date will be determined by mutual agreement.

Salary and benefits

An initial salary range of $98,496–$128,043 will be offered, based on education and experience. The salary listed is for the Rest of U.S. Locality. Salary will be adjusted to reflect the candidate's negotiated location. The Office of Personnel Management provides more information about locality and pay scales. Salary increases will be tied to performance.

This position provides federal benefits such as annual and sick leave, Thrift Savings 401(k)-equivalent, and health and life insurance.

Location and schedule

This role is located in Hyattsville, Maryland. The NCHS office is in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area. A flexible work schedule (telework or remote schedule) may be offered at the discretion of the division.

Free onsite parking or a public transportation subsidy is available. The local subway station is within walking distance, and a free shuttle is available to and from the station.
