During these years, 37.2%26#37; of emergency department visits for influenza and pneumonia by adults aged ≥18 years resulted in a hospital admission. The percentage increased with age from 14.4%26#37; for adults aged 18–54 years to 46.9%26#37; for adults aged 55–74 years and 69.7%26#37; for adults aged ≥75 years.

Influenza and pneumonia defined as any ED visit with International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM) codes J09J18.

§ Based on a sample of visits to EDs in noninstitutional general and short-stay hospitals, exclusive of federal, military, and Veterans Administration hospitals, located in the 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia.

During 2017–2018, 37.2% of ED visits for influenza and pneumonia by adults aged ≥18 years resulted in a hospital admission. The percentage increased with age from 14.4% for adults aged 18–54 years to 46.9% for adults aged 55–74 years and 69.7% for adults aged ≥75 years.
