Publication of MMWR Recommendations and Reports on HIV and Hepatitis B Virus in Health-Care and Public-Safety WorkersA new MMWR Recommendations and Reports, "Guidelines for Prevention of Transmission of Human Immunodeficiency Virus and Hepatitis B Virus to Health-Care and Public-Safety Workers," was published June 23, 1989 (1). This document provides an overview of the modes of transmission of human immunodeficiency virus and hepatitis B virus in the workplace, an assessment of the risk for transmission under various assumptions, principles underlying the control of risk, and specific risk-control recommendations for employers and workers. This document also includes information on medical management of persons who have sustained an exposure at the workplace to these viruses (e.g., an emergency medical technician who incurs a needlestick injury while performing professional duties). These guidelines are intended for use by a technically informed audience. A separate model curriculum based on the principles and practices discussed in this document is being developed for use in training workers. Reference
