Influenza Activity, April-May, United States, 1982
Several states reported influenza activity in April and May
1982,
including the first laboratory isolations of influenza virus for
the
season in Idaho, Ohio, and West Virginia. In Idaho, influenza B
virus
was isolated from several patients in a nursing home during an
outbreak of influenza that affected more than half the residents
and
continued from mid-April to early May, and in Ohio and West
Virginia
influenza B viruses were isolated from patients with sporadic cases
who became ill in April and May, respectively.
Outbreaks of influenza occurred in institutions in California,
Montana, New York, and South Dakota in April or May. However,
little
other coincident influenza activity was noted in the surrounding
communities when these focal outbreaks occurred. At a Job Corps
Center in Upstate New York, almost 200 of the 380 residents had
influenza-like illness during an outbreak that began in mid-April.
Influenza type A(H1N1) virus was isolated from 4 of 10 patients
tested. In South Dakota, approximately half of the 80 residents of
a
nursing home had influenza-like illness early in April. Serologic
testing following the outbreak suggested that these persons had
recently had influenza B infection. In April, influenza B was also
serologically diagnosed as being associated with an outbreak of
illness in a nursing home in Montana. In California, an outbreak
of
influenza began in early May and affected about half of the
patients
and staff members in 2 of 5 wards in a state hospital. Influenza B
viruses were isolated from patients in both wards.
