What to know
Immunization information systems (IIS) are confidential, population-based, computerized databases that record all immunization doses administered by participating providers to persons residing within a given geopolitical area. This information details how to access immunization records for vaccine recipients who received a vaccine in West Virginia.
General Information
West Virginia's IIS is the West Virginia Statewide Immunization Information System (WVSIIS), and it includes immunization records for vaccine recipients of all ages. Visit this webpage to learn more about the IIS.
The jurisdiction is authorized by law to operate WVSIIS. For more information, please see West Virginia Administrative Code § 64-7-6.1.
Child Consent to Participate
For children, WVSIIS requires mandatory inclusion by operational policy. Children are included in the IIS with no possibility for their parent(s)/guardian(s) to opt them out.
Adult Consent to Participate
For adults, WVSIIS requires mandatory inclusion by operational policy. Adults are included in the IIS with no possibility to opt out.
Provider Reporting
West Virginia does have a mandate for vaccination providers to report immunizations to WVSIIS. The operational reporting mandate:
- Applies only to a subset of vaccine recipients (i.e., children aged 18 years and younger) and
- Applies only to specific immunizations (i.e., COVID-19 immunizations).
Data Sharing
West Virginia does have a policy that regulates sharing data from WVSIIS with other public health entities. The operational data sharing policy:
- Requires a data use/sharing agreement or memorandum of understanding and
- Requires that the data are only used for public health or other specific purposes.
