Overview
The Vaccine 2D Barcode Scanning Implementation Toolkit is a series of resources and tools that may support different aspects of vaccine 2D barcode scanning implementation in ambulatory clinics, health care facilities, pharmacies, and health systems. Resources were developed for various roles of the implementation team and for various phases of implementation. Briefs and Guidance Documents
- Brief: Different Vaccine Lot Numbers [2 pages] describes the background and challenges of different vaccine lot numbers on the unit of sale (UoS) vaccine product (package or salable box) and the unit of use (UoU) vaccine product (e.g., vial, syringe). The brief describes current tools, ongoing efforts, and plans to update information related to this issue.
- Updated Guidance for Documenting Vaccine National Drug Codes (NDCs) and Lot Numbers in IISs and EHRs (January 2021) [3 pages] includes guidance for both immunization providers and immunization information system (IIS) managers, with clarification on UoU and UoS data, reconstituted vaccines, and various presentations of one vaccine.
- Adopting 2D Barcodes: Information for Pharmacies [2 pages] is a one-page brief providing information to pharmacists on the benefits of scanning 2D barcodes on vaccine products and the importance of adopting those barcodes in pharmacies.
Training Materials
Training materials currently include four videos on how to use 2D barcode scanners: features and benefits, scanning instructions, scanner maintenance, and next steps.
