What to know
Researchers at Northern Arizona University monitored two populations on opposite vaccination schedules and compared their impact on SARS-CoV-2 transmission. One site monitored vaccinated residents in two long-term care facilities, and the other site monitored unvaccinated school-aged children in a school setting. The two populations provided an ideal opportunity to explore the impacts of vaccination on viral evolution, infection rates, and transmission.
Findings on SARS-CoV-2 surveillance and investigations
This project established multiple study sites at long-term care facilities and schools and worked closely with administrators at the facilities and the school district COVID response team to provide biweekly testing and genomic surveillance for SARS-CoV-2 and other respiratory viruses and bacteria.
